Day-3 Matches Overview:

As Earl Strickland, a veteran and a hero, and Shane Van Boening played their 100th match in the Mosconi Cup; things started off quickly. The match against Europe’s Jayson Shaw and David Alcaide was close, with the USA winning 3-2. Strickland and Van Boening went to the hill after Alcaide’s scratch on the break in rack six. The two probably didn’t like how close it got, especially when Shaw missed the nine in rack seven and evened up for a hill-hill finish. Strickland and Van Boening gave each other ideas that helped the USA win games 5-4.

Alcaide went back out to play Tyler Styer in a singles match, and the crowd hoped the momentum would stay with the USA. Up until 4-0 up, Alcaide was just cueing, and there wasn’t much room for error. Styer sat still for a lot of the game, and for the first time this week, he had trouble making balls off the break. The man from Wisconsin pulled out the jump cue as he ran out the fifth to make it a contest. One more rack went by before Alcaide put his stamp on the match to tie it again at 5-5.

Strickland was right in the middle of the action, playing with Skyler Woodward against World Pool Masters winner Joshua Filler and US Open winner Francisco Sanchez Ruiz in the 11th match of the cup. The first few games were close, but Sanchez Ruiz showed why he is the best nine-ball player in the world by making an epic bank shot that put him up 3-1. At times, Strickland fought hard to save Woodward’s face, but it wasn’t enough as Sanchez Ruiz made a winning golden break 5-2 to give Europe the overall lead.

Strickland didn’t have time to think about his last match because he was about to play the European Open champion, Albin Ouschan. It was a hellish time for the veteran. After getting a quick two-rack lead, Strickland didn’t see the table much for the rest of the game. Those few seconds cost him a lot, as Ouschan came back strong to win 5-2 with five in a row.

The big match between Van Boening and vice-captain Woodward of the United States and Shaw and Filler of Europe always promised to be exciting, and it did so in a way that not many people could have predicted before the first ball was potted. Van Boening and Woodward had the first clean sweep of the week, which kept the United States in the tie going into the day’s last match. It was very interesting.

Shaw has been a problem for the USA for a long time, but he has had trouble finding a rhythm this week. But things changed when he caught Oscar Dominguez to give Europe a 2-0 lead before the last day. Shaw had gotten ahead by two racks, but Dominguez tied it up at two each. From there, Shaw hit a new gear to bring home another European point.

2022 Mosconi Cup Day 2 Overview

Earl Strickland and Jayson Shaw were chosen for the Fans’ Choice Singles Match, which started on Day 2. Strickland wanted to turn back the clock, but he did more than that when he came back to take an early 3-0 lead that made Shaw sit quietly in his chair. Shaw found his rhythm again in the fourth rack, and Strickland’s costly scratch in the fifth rack brought Shaw within one. When Strickland missed the ball in the sixth while trying to cut the eight in, Shaw had the easiest chance to tie things up again. Shaw, a two-time Most Valuable Player, soon finished the comeback. He excited the crowd and brought Team Europe within one game, bringing their overall score to 3-2.

Shane Van Boening playing Joshua Filler in the first singles match was never going to be boring, and it wasn’t. Van Boening ran out of balls in the third rack, giving Filler an easy 1-9 combination to win 2-1. There was a lot of life in the match, and when Filler had to drop out for an untimely reason, the score was tied at 3-3, much to the delight of the US fans. Filler lost his position in the seventh, but he had an amazing runout to first get to the top of the hill. After a brilliant break and run, Europe was tied at 3-3 overall.

The USA needed to stop Europe from winning, and it was up to Tyler Styer and Oscar Dominguez to do it against Filler and Albin Ouschan in match seven of the cup. Nothing could separate them until 3-3, when Styer made an uncharacteristic miss on a six into the middle pocket, allowing Filler and Ouschan to come back into the game and reach the hill first, making it look like an easy runout for the USA. Dominguez went airborne on the five in the next rack, a mistake because the Europeans finished the rest of the rack to get their third point of the day.

Francisco Sanchez Ruiz played Skyler Woodward, the USA’s vice-captain, in his first singles match. This was the last thing that happened that day. The crowd was cheering, but it quieted down when Sanchez Ruiz took a 2-0 lead. Woodward got lucky when he banked the six ball for the entire table length and then got a good position on the seven to cut the deficit. The crowd at home had high hopes, and Woodward quickly turned the game around to lead 3-2 and then 4-2 in a short time.

The play was stopped when Woodward got to the top of the hill because of a global broadcast outage. The players had to leave the track while a fix was made so people at home could keep watching live. When they got back, Sanchez Ruiz broke dry, and Woodward made sure that the USA would go into day three tied at 4-4 overall with a professional runout that included a beautiful jump on the one, securing a crucial point as Europe won day two 3-1.

Day 1 Overview

Team Europe entered the team match wanting to win the tournament opener for the first time since 2018, while Team USA was counting on the raucous support of the home fans, and they got it with an outstanding first point, 5-3.

World Cup of Pool champions Francisco Sanchez Ruiz and David Alcaide were making their debuts for Mexico against the United States, while match two was Earl Strickland and Oscar Dominguez’s first appearance with Jeremy Jones’ USA team after returning from injury. Though Strickland and Dominguez had their chances against the Spanish team, Sanchez Ruiz found his stride in his maiden Mosconi Cup, with Alcaide leading him to an overwhelming 5-1 triumph.

Fans were screaming for more from the home team USA, and they got it when vice-captain and starting pitcher Skyler Woodward faced up against Joshua Filler. Filler went to the hill first at 4-3, but Woodward had a chance to tie it up with the eighth rack of consistency thanks to an alternative break. More than he bargained for, the Blue Grass Bad Ass caught a golden break that allowed him to win the week’s first hill-hill. The ninth rack was kicked off by a sharp safety play, and it seemed like Filler was about to receive his chance. With the pressure off, Woodward went to the top of the key and scored the second point of the day for the United States.

Matches Overview

The momentum had flipped in the United States’ favor, and they secured a two-point lead heading into day two when world champions Shane Van Boening and Tyler Styer upset Albin Ouschan and Jayson Shaw in a thrilling hill-hill race.

I don’t think challenges are much higher in Las Vegas than in London. We’ve had one goal in mind all season long: to come here and take home the cup.

Last year we were in a very good position, but we blew it by letting certain items through the cracks. We want to repeat a similar situation this year, but with a more favorable conclusion. We’ve been running the latency, so now we know how to do it as a team. “The gap doesn’t seem as significant this year, but it’s still critical, and we’ve taken steps to fix it,” Jones said.

The role of vice-captain is an honor, Woodward remarked. This motivates me to do my best and demonstrate that the United States is still a global power. There are six of us on the squad, and I’m simply trying to make us all feel like a single unit. I’m not the kind to stand by and watch others fail; instead, I’ll encourage and motivate everyone to achieve victory in their contests.

We’ve had a polished squad from the start. The bad news is that they’ve been playing and traveling a lot, but the good news is that they’re very knowledgeable. This jacket has tight pockets. As far as I can tell, it aids them. If your financial situation is precarious, you must pay close attention to the game. Because of it, I believe they have a more polished and concentrated appearance.

It’s hard to believe that this is Francisco Sanchez Ruiz’s first Mosconi Cup, but he’s having a career year that includes a US Open title. In all honesty, I plan to spare no effort. It’s been a fantastic year, but I’ll admit that I’ve been looking forward exclusively to the day after. It’s incredible to share the field with David Alcaide; our time spent playing together will be unforgettable.

The rivalry between American icon Earl Strickland and Team Europe playing vice-captain Jayson Shaw was front and center, as the two men sparred over several issues. When asked what he liked most about the competition, Strickland praised the equipment, praising the narrower 4-inch pockets. It’s the toughest thing I’ve ever encountered. Team Europe are foolish if they believe they can make every shot.

Shaw chimed in, saying his team always scores, but Strickland quickly shot back that he wasn’t interested in the British player’s “bullsh*t.” I wouldn’t be surprised if he won four or five world titles on 5-inch pockets. He is free to express his opinions. I’m familiar with the backroom’s cash flow situation. I’m well aware of how well-organized they are, but the truth is, our aim is more precise than that of any of them. There’s also the undeniable reality that when pressured, we perform better. We will not be cowering in fear when we put ourselves in harm’s way.

Having a go at the Mosconi Cup in Las Vegas is an experience that is difficult to put into words. It’s as if you know you can always count on support from the sky. The excitement here is over the roof.

Meanwhile, Lely is trying to lead a win on American territory for the first time since 2017, and he is well aware of the difficulty of the task at hand. This year promises to be a new challenge for Lely to guide his side to a three-peat: “We are looking forward to playing in Las Vegas in front of the US fans. The Dutch native is no stranger to winning, having led Europe to back-to-back victories in the UK, losing only nine points in the process with wins of 11-3 in 2020 and 11-6 last year at Alexandra Palace. Unfortunately, they have been deprived of opportunities like this as of late, so it is only fair that they get to enjoy the year’s largest event in all its glory up and personal. I have no doubt that they will welcome us with open arms.

“We get together well before the event starts, and we will get practice in, but more so, I want the team to fortify our bonds and become as tightly knit as possible and as a unit,” says Lely, describing the team’s training program, which is both rigorous and to the point as it prepares for another victory. We stick united and keep our minds on the game until the very last ball is thrown.

In 2017, things got off to a bad start for Europe as they lost the team match for the third year running and were down by five runs entering the third day, thanks to the United States’ impressive middle order. Lely said it kept him up all night, and he scheduled a team meeting in his room for the wee hours of the morning before day three: “This is my third straight year, and this time we want to go out of the gates strong.” You might say they went in with all cylinders firing. I want my guys to go out there with their hearts on their sleeves and show some courage right from the first whistle. We expect this to be a challenging week, and we know that a strong beginning is our best defense against the challenges ahead.
